Challenge:

An offshore vessel operator needed engine exhaust expansion joints that could withstand continuous thermal cycling, vibration, and backpressure from large marine diesel engines. The joints had to be type-approved by Bureau Veritas (BV) and fit within constrained engine room spaces without compromising durability or performance.

Solution Provided:

FlexiBel engineered and supplied metallic exhaust bellows with BV Type Approval, built from high-temperature stainless steel (SS 321) with integral tie rods and reinforced collars. The bellows were designed for axial and lateral movement and delivered with marine-grade insulation wrap to control heat radiation.

Why FlexiBel:

  • BV Type Approved metallic bellows designed for marine exhaust applications
  • Welded flanged ends for quick bolt-on retrofit during drydock
  • Thermal insulation included to meet onboard safety and crew comfort standards
  • Provided full class certification, welding records, and pressure test reports

Result:

The bellows were successfully installed on two support vessels during scheduled drydock. Post-installation inspection confirmed thermal expansion was effectively absorbed, and engine room vibration was reduced. The solution is now being replicated on additional vessels in the client’s fleet.
