Challenge:

A contractor working on an FSRU project required expansion joints for cryogenic pipelines transferring LNG from storage tanks to the regasification modules. The bellows had to withstand extreme contraction at cryogenic temperatures (approx. -160°C), absorb thermal movement due to vessel motion, and ensure long-term reliability in a marine environment.

Solution Provided:

FlexiBel supplied multi-ply 316L stainless steel bellows, specifically designed for cryogenic service. The design incorporated internal liners to reduce flow-induced vibration and external covers for mechanical protection. All welds were full-penetration and inspected using radiography. The assemblies were helium leak tested and degreased for oxygen service.

Why FlexiBel:

  • Supplied 316L SS construction for corrosion resistance and cryogenic performance
  • Helium leak tested and cleaned to ISO 21010 standards for LNG applications
  • Designed for axial movement and vibration caused by vessel flex and thermal load
  • Delivered with third-party inspection, material traceability, and full QA documentation

Result:

The bellows have been successfully operating onboard the FSRU with zero leaks or failures reported during commissioning and cold testing. FlexiBel’s responsiveness and deep understanding of offshore cryogenic challenges led to further RFQs from the EPC for future floating LNG projects.
